The Colorado Bar Association Family Law Section appoints
Lesleigh Monahan as Co-Chair of the “Family Court Task Force”

In March of 2007, the Colorado Bar Association Family Law Section formed a Task Force to research, analyze and make recommendations regarding whether a unified family court system should be implemented in the State of Colorado and whether such systems are actually successful.  The Task Force, co-chaired by Lesleigh Monahan and Steve McBride, has a diverse membership of district court judges, district court magistrates, family law attorneys and mediators, mental health professionals and state court administrators.  The Task Force is currently engaged in a two-year project to gather data on Family Court Systems both in the United States and abroad.  The Task Force is charged with the goal of identifying “the best practices” in family court systems around the country and compare them to what might exist already in the State of Colorado.  The Task Force shall then make recommendations relative to improvements of the Colorado family court system to the Judicial Branch, the Legislature and the Governor’s office.

In May of 2007, Ms. Monahan attended an American Bar Association conference on Family Courts in Baltimore, Maryland where judicial officers and lawyers from around the country met in a three-day conference to discuss Unified Family Courts.  Significant information was gathered relative to the 8 or 9 Family Court Systems currently in existence in the United States.  The goal of the Colorado Family Court Task Force is to consider blending existing systems already in effect in Colorado into a new unified family court system that will better serve the parents and children involved in Colorado courts.
